We were delayed by the discovery of a broken inner spring on cylinder five. The entire process was approximately two hours long with lots of chat and craic. I was going to post pics of the broken keeper but don't remember where I laid it, if I tossed it into the scrap barrel it will probably be next to impossible to find without dumping the barrel. The air compressor was connected to each cylinder in turn and the compressed air supported the closed valve when the spring was removed to allow the new collar fitting. I got it running today and everything seems fine so I am going to go ahead and make the Southern Swing trip but I think I am going to tear it down again this winter and do a complete replacement of valves, springs collars and keepers and go over everything with a magnifying glass. Is it possible that this thing has been broken for some time and just decided this day to let go completely and have you ever seen a valve drop that didn't destroy the piston? I am still dumbfounded by this. How do you check the rocker to collar interference without using a cutout rocker box or is it even possible without it?
